Tell Manmohan Singh to "Put Indian lives above foreign profits -- Stop the import of dangerous nuclear reactors to Maharashtra"
Dear Tuhin Kumar,

Why should we oppose this plant?

  • Thousands of safety violations have been detected in Areva's first EPR project in Finland.
  • There is no approved solution for high-level nuclear waste anywhere in the world.
  • No EPRs will be built in the US because of prohibitively high costs.
  • An accident would put millions at risk including those in densely populated Mumbai.

Last week over 600 people were arrested for standing up for their rights to live and work in safe surroundings. Over 2320 acres of land is being acquired by the Maharashtra government for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to build 6 mega nuclear reactors in Ratnagiri district. Protests have been suppressed using police violence and false charges[1].

The NPCIL is planning to import expensive and unsafe nuclear reactors from French company, Areva. US and European nuclear regulators have identified severe flaws in the reactor and they have not approved the design.[2]

Over 2000 people will lose their land and over 10,000 people will have their health and livelihood affected due to this plant. Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh has the power to stop the import of dangerous nuclear reactors and listen to the concerns of the local people.

Can you ask Dr. Manmohan Singh asking him to put the interests of Indian people above the interests of foreign nuclear companies.

http://www.greenpeace.org/india/en/Tell-manmohan-singh-to-stop-import-of-untested-nuclear-reactors/

Most of the people around the region have refused the compensation offered by the Maharashtra government. Showing their opposition to the nuclear power plant, over 3000 people voluntarily risked jail and they have been joined by prominent figures such as former High Court judge B. G. Kolse-Patil, Admiral L. Ramdas and retired Supreme Court Judge P. B. Samant.

The Indian government is once again putting the profits of foreign companies above the interests of its own people. Instead of putting people at risk we can provide safe electricity at a cheaper cost[3] and much faster[4] with decentralised renewable energy.

Tell Dr. Manmohan Singh to put the safety of Indians first and stop the import of dangerous nuclear reactors to Maharashtra.

Dear Tuhin Kumar,

This is amazing! Over 20,000 people like you have taken the pledge to support renewable energy (RE). The energy infrastructure of the future is not one based on fossil fuels, but on RE – as that will make us energy secure in the long run, not coal.

Greenpeace launched the Urja Kranti yatra (Energy Revolution tour) in Bihar, which travelled over 1800 kms, spreading awareness about RE. Villages with a population of over 25 lakh are now supporters of RE. The traditional power systems don't deliver any power to these villages – not even in those which are on the grid and are supposed to be electrified.

Their support has resulted in four political parties of the state identifying RE as playing an important role in tackling the state's energy crisis. If we get more people to pledge support to RE, we can help show the importance of RE to all our leaders in the country.

Can you send the email below to your friends and family asking them to pledge their support to RE?

Dear Tuhin Kumar,

Click here to take a pledge for renewable energy
I have just returned from Bihar, where I travelled over 1800 kms, spreading the message of renewable energy (RE). Now there are villages with population of over 25 lakh people supporting RE. These villages have little or no access to electricity.

On 2nd October, 2010 Greenpeace launched the Urja Swaraj yatra from the Gandhi Sevagram in Bhitiharva, west Champaran, - the place where Gandhiji had called for swarajya (independence) in 1916. We met hundreds of village heads, self-help groups, local youth leaders, village people and local entrepreneurs and spoke to them about RE alternatives like solar, biomass and wind.

The idea was to garner support for RE in Bihar and make the political parties take notice of it in their manifestoes during the elections in the state. By signing this pledge you can help add strength to the demands being made by the people in the rural Bihar and also show our leaders the support for RE in the entire country.

Can you also show your support for RE by taking this pledge?

http://greenpeace.in/bihar-renewable-energy-pledge.html

The pledge says: I support clean and green renewable energy.

Four political parties in Bihar have already referred to RE playing a significant role in Bihar's energy plans in their manifestos. This happened mainly due to the support RE got from the people in rural Bihar.

Energy is central to development. This development can be green and clean if we invest in renewable energy.

This kind of energy can power rural Bihar [1] and change people's lives now. The energy revolution might just begin in Bihar!

Take the pledge to support renewable energy now and spread the word.

We have left governance to people who are not really our representative, policy to people who do not feel they are accountable to us, environment to NGOs who struggle without our support – the list can go on and on…We all talk of various problems in India at home, on facebook walls ,in our drawing rooms, offices, linkedin, etc.– but do little.Part of the reason is that we think that solving these are responsibility of the government, politicians, bureaucracy, economists or NGO's .Anyone but us.We are very fond of talking of our RIGHTS but shy away from even talking about our responsibilities as a citizen of the country. Many of us do not even bother to vote and then criticize the people who are elected on vote bank politics. This INERTIA is the root cause of many of our problems and we are partly to be blamed. So came the idea of INDIA REDEFINED ( www.indiaredefined-a4c.org)– A movement to create responsible and empowered citizens by bringing about "Behavioral Change". It is only when we do our duties we shall be empowered to demand our rights. It is by this change in behavior that we can unlock people's potential to be empowered citizens. This will redefine how we think and act as an Indian. …..and that is what INDIA Redefined is about. So, what is the Vision of INDIA Redefined? It is simply – CREATING A HAPPY INDIAAnd how can we create a Happy India? Most of the ordinary people want to do something for the country, they just don't know how. The idea is to mobilize these masses and bring them together. How does INDIA Redefined do it?By giving a structure to this… 'Desire to do Something'.By creating an opportunity for them, to achieve small successes in doing something for the society… Something within his resources and available time– a simple successful activity, that would not only be beneficial at a larger scale but also provide the motivation to strive for bigger changes. Developing this behavioral change across Indians of all strata, INDIA Redefined plans to tackle problems, leveraging the power of individual. It is a citizen's empowerment movement - a platform for ordinary citizens by ordinary citizens – each fulfilling his own ISR - Individual Social Responsibility. What makes this movement unique or even different?Well, there are many wonderful organizations, NGO, Charities which do a lot of wonderful work - But it never seems to be enough. Most of them work within a context or for a specific cause, that the overall positive effect ….. is lost in the gaps. One of the biggest reasons is that we have not tapped efficiently into the potential of the individual. INDIA Redefined is a platform for people from different, different social class, having different outlooks and opinions to come together and work towards redefining India. That is why INDIA Redefined's vision is created by an amalgamation of different visions that ultimately leads to a HAPPY INDIA.It is important to understand that we are not affiliated with a single political party or motive. But do not hesitate to work with any and every political party, business houses or NGO for the right cause.By bringing drops of people together on a common platform INDIA Redefined creates an ocean – Ocean strong enough to make government, politicians, public servants not only accountable but also make each Indian an Awakened Citizen… So where is INDIA Redefined today? In one year time the membership has already reached more than a lakh. This shows that there are people out there who want to 'do something'…Make a difference. All they need is the platform. The idea has not only got support of people but also some– it was adjudged "The Best Humanitarian Initiative" in December 2009 In this long journey of redefining India, we have taken only a few baby steps But then again, a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step…This idea…. Idea of a movement that is trying to tackle most, if not all, social issues and help citizens become empowered by the means of behavioral change, asks you for only one thing – DONATION. Not of MONEY. But of TIME. JOIN India Redefined.( www.indiaredefined-a4c.org )

An appeal from India Redefined movement

Please send this message to all the Indians you know.

India Redefined, a non-political Citizen's Empowerment movemenwww.indiaredefined-a4c.org is asking to fulfill ISR-Individual Social Responsibility, just as CSR is for corporates.

As a citizen of India, we ask you -

Do you want to make India better?

Are you fed up of table-talks with no action?

Are you willing to do your bit for the country?

Are you confused how to do this?

If your answer to any of these is YES, then join

India Redefined

India Redefined (www.indiaredefined-a4c.org) is a non-political Citizen's Empowerment movement.  The movement got an award as 'The Best Humanitarian Initiative 2009'. The movement was started to light up the fire in the hearts of very Indian citizen, to be awakened, to exercise their rights and fulfill their obligation & responsibilities. This movement is for those Indians want to change the country into something which they will be proud to hand over to their children tomorrow. Citizen rights have been provided at the cost of some duties and obligations – these could be constitutional, social, civic or societal duties, that must be and should be performed by every citizen of India.  Then only we can demand our rights.

India Redefined draws its inspiration from Gandhian Movement which was a revolution focused on independence. It was also about specific actions like non- cooperation by citizens. We are just trying to apply many Gandhiji's principles' in this era, in this society and during these times. Maybe in a different flavor! Maybe the context is different! Maybe it's a different world! But the goal is same! He also wanted India a better place to live in.

If all of us fellow Indians decide to come together on a common platform like India Redefined, for once leaving our religion, political affiliations, language, state, caste etc. at home, and with a common cause of creating India Redefined as the strongest platform to empower citizens, we really can have INDIA of our dreams. It is a social movement which is more about awareness, responsibility and ownership by all of us. Before we Indians start demanding what government can do for us, we should start thinking what we can do for our country.

Political Parties ask for Votes from common people, India Redefined is asking for only Support, because it is citizen's movement and not a political party. Political parties claim to work for 100 crore people, but if 100 crore people work for Redefining India – what can stop it from becoming the most powerful country. Put all your goodness on one platform - India Redefined, become the strongest citizen group & make public officials accountable by ensuring better governance, infrastructure and killing the corruption. India Redefined aims to help you fulfill your ISR - Individual Social Responsibility.

Do you require to have any special qualification or skill for Redefining India? Well, you only require -

Love for "INDIA"

Passion to be the "Catalyst" of change

Belief in your "Actions"

Trust in others to become as "Committed"

Action to "Change" – yourself and others around you

India Redefined is trying to be the enablers of behavioral change in each of us! We must target the root causes - even if it is going to take longer. If each of us have a behavioral change, we could solve problems like Corruption (Clean, Transparent & Good Governance), Hygiene (Good health and Sanitation), Pollution (Clean and Green Environment), and Human Relations (harmonious Relationship with each other and different communities).

Implementation of India Redefined is divided into six stages, and when integrated, bases itself to a holistic improvement.

As the part of the implementation under AWAKEN INDIA, we have initiated our first project named "I CARE" which aims to get a large number of people motivated by executing simple activities SUCUSSEFULLY, which anyone is free to do. For example – Plant 10 trees and ignites 10 more people to do so. Reduce your Electric bill by 20 percent and ignite 10 more people to do. The key aspects in designing the activities are SIMPLICITY and HIGH SUCCESS RATIO.

These small activities when participated by large number of Indians will have a vibrant 'Dominos Effect'. Doing these activities will give the people moral confidence and a sense of achievement to participate in bigger activities. Awakening consists of:

Awareness (which is Gaining knowledge),

Education (or ability to Process knowledge) and

Communication (Spreading of knowledge)

The other projects under India Redefined umbrella are going to be "EDUCATE INDIA" and "Develop Your Own Village" which will be launched in coming months.

Youth, studying in colleges are helping to implement "EDUCATE INDIA". Students who are willing to be part of this movement take the oath - "I donate" 6 months of my life in training or education, for those who are underprivileged."

In India, education is supposed to be the great equalizer and the primary vehicle for upward mobility. But, the reality today is that all too often, where children are born determines their educational prospects.  Across the country, largest number of children living in poverty have academic and, therefore, life prospects that are dramatically different than those of their peers in wealthier communities. Mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity (in terms of quality of education) by enlisting our nation's most promising future leaders in the effort.

"I donate" will help in recruiting outstanding college graduates from all backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for 6 months in urban and rural schools for underprivileged during or immediately after their student life.

We appeal to you to join as a Volunteer and put your goodness in this basket of India Redefined

India Redefined (www.indiaredefined-a4c.org) is asking to fulfill ISR-Individual Social Responsibility, just as CSR is for corporates. The movement got an award as 'The Best Humanitarian Initiative 2009'. Youth, studying in colleges are helping to implement "EDUCATE INDIA". Students who are willing to be part of this movement take the oath - "I donate" 6 months of my life in training or education, for those who are underprivileged".
We need more City Coordinators, Chapter Coordinators and Student Coordinators to take on the responsibility, in different cities of India. There are 92 State Coordinators, City coordinators, chapter coordinators and few student coordinators till now in different cities of India. If you want to suggest anyone's names for Chapter Coordinator or Student Coordinators then please send a mail regarding this at
ranjanakanti@indiaredefined-a4c.org All work is purely voluntary and no money is asked or paid – because this is your own movement and you should be doing it for yourself.

Let us come together on a common platform like India Redefined, for once leaving our religion, political affiliations, language, state, caste etc. at home, and with a common cause of creating India Redefined as the strongest platform to empower citizens, we really can have INDIA of our dreams.

Also I came across a blog by an Indian expert ( http://bit.ly/9GezND ) explaining about the use cutting edge technologies of two different initiatives of US & UK governments in providing a smarter, open and transparent government. The approach by UK government looks very interesting, using Semantic Technology & Linked Data. This is need of the hour for our own government and I wonder when our leaders will wake up to implement such a system. Our government's effort have, so far, been piece-meal in providing scattered e-governance solutions and require a focus in the direction taken by other leading world governments to give the citizens a smarter government, better sooner than later.

We should try to get bureaucrats at policy making level and dynamic ministers in the government to look up at this kind of initiatives and even try getting people like these to help create an integrated framework for smarter governance.
